How to Handle Temporary Closure of Business Locations

Businesses may close temporarily from time to time. Some businesses are only open seasonally, and they may be closed for months at a time each year. Whether because of a pandemic, like COVID-19, inclement weather, or any other reason, it is important to update your online listings to ensure customers aren’t showing up when your business is closed.

To mark a location as temporarily closed on Google, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business)
  2. Click “Info”
  3. Expand the the section titled “Close this business on Google”
  4. Click “Mark as temporarily closed”
Google recommends only using its temporary closure feature if your business will be closed for at least seven days in a row or if it will be closed for an unknown length of time. Marking a business as temporarily closed will not affect local search ranking.   Although Google is the first place that many consumers search for local business information, it is not the only place. Consumers today search for business information on a variety of directories, websites, and mobile apps. In addition to marking your business as closed on Google, you should make sure to update your listings on the following platforms:
  • Yelp
  • Facebook
  • Apple Maps
  • Bing
  • Foursquare
  • TripAdvisor (hotels and restaurants)
