Local Visibility Benchmarks for Multi-Location Brands: 2026 Data by Channel and Industry
Local visibility benchmarks for multi-location brands show how the average brand in your industry performs across AI search, traditional search, reputation, and social. According to SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, which analyzed 2,751 brands and roughly 350,000 locations, only 1.2% of locations are recommended by ChatGPT, compared to 35.9% that appear in Google’s local 3-Pack. Strong Google visibility does not guarantee AI recommendations. Benchmarking each location against its category shows where the biggest gaps sit and which locations need attention first.
The Multi-Location Challenge: Executing on Local Marketing Priorities
If you market a brand with locations spread across dozens, hundreds, or thousands of markets, you already know the hard part is not agreeing on priorities. Leadership can align on local search ranking, location-level reputation management, and social activity, and still watch execution stall when it has to happen consistently in every market.
AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode raise the stakes. There are more ways than ever for a consumer to discover your brand, and more ways to be missed if your locations are not set up to be found. Benchmarks give you a fact base for deciding where to act first.
What Is a Local Visibility Benchmark?
A local visibility benchmark is a measurement of how the average brand in your industry performs online. It is the minimum bar you need to clear to outperform the average competitor: a factual baseline drawn from real data, not an aspirational target.
SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index (LVI) puts real numbers behind that baseline:
Search versus AI
Across all industries, brands appear in Google’s local 3-Pack 35.9% of the time. Only 1.2% of locations are recommended by ChatGPT, 11.0% by Gemini, and 7.4% by Perplexity. AI platforms are 3 to 30 times more selective than traditional local search.
Reputation
The average business responds to 46.9% of its Google reviews and 3.1% of its Yelp reviews.
The rating bar for AI
Locations recommended by ChatGPT average a 4.3 star rating, and locations recommended by Perplexity average 4.2. In AI-driven discovery, reviews work less like a ranking factor and more like a filter for inclusion.
Why Are Local Visibility Benchmarks Relevant to Multi-Location Brand Performance?
In AI-driven local discovery, there is no page two. A location is either recommended or invisible. Across industries, fewer than half of the brands that lead in traditional local search also appear among the top AI local recommendations, so a strong Google ranking is no longer a proxy for AI visibility.
Consumers are already using AI to find local businesses. SOCi’s 2026 Local Discovery Index found that 52% of consumers used an AI tool to research a local business in the last 30 days, up from 9% the year before.
They also verify before they choose, a pattern SOCi calls the local discovery verification loop. The same study found that 99% of consumers read reviews at least some of the time before visiting a business, and 72% are more likely to choose a business that responds to its reviews. The LVI shows the gap: the average business responds to 46.9% of its Google reviews.
The factors benchmarks measure (search ranking, AI recommendation rate, review volume and response, and social engagement) decide which side of that line a location lands on. Track them by location, next to calls, direction requests, and leads, and visibility ties directly to revenue.

How Your Multi-Location Brand Can Start Using Local Visibility Benchmarks Today
Benchmarks work when they anchor your planning process, not when they sit in a quarterly slide. Build the process once and repeat it each quarter:
- Pull the benchmarks for your category across AI visibility, search performance, reputation, and social at the local level.
- Pull the same metrics for the brand overall and for individual locations or regions.
- Compare and flag the biggest gaps by channel.
- Tier your locations: top 25%, middle 50%, bottom 25%.
- Set targets by tier. The bottom tier’s first goal is the benchmark itself. The middle and top tiers aim above it.
- Execute, measure, and repeat next quarter.
- Set a standing goal for every location to clear the benchmark in every channel.
Most multi-location brands will find at least one channel where they trail the average competitor. Closing that gap first is usually the highest-leverage move available. For the execution side, see our guide to multi-location marketing and how AI agents close the multi-location automation gap.
Where Can I Find Local Visibility Benchmarks for My Multi-Location Brand?
Plenty of vendors claim to offer local visibility benchmarks. Before trusting one, ask:
- Does it cover every relevant channel, including AI, search, reputation, and social, not just one or two?
- Is the underlying data independent, or is it skewed toward a provider’s own customer base?
SOCi’s Local Visibility Index meets both bars. The 2026 LVI evaluates brands across 42 local industry categories spanning retail, local services, financial services, food and beverage, and property management, using more than 120 metrics across Google, Yelp, Facebook, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
